24-year-old soldier in Greece’s Presidential Guard dies in barracks

A soldier serving in the Presidential Guard fell ill and died on Thursday night, while in the barracks. The 24-year-old was transferred to the Military Hospital in Athens where doctors could only confirm his death.

The Greek General Staff announced that the causes of the soldier’s death are been investigated.

According to preliminary information the death has pathological causes, media report.

The young man has finished his second shift 7:00 pm – 8:00 p.m., returned to the barracks and fell asleep. Later, when his colleagues tried to wake him up for the night call, the man stood up and collapsed immediately afterwards.

Before joining the Presidential Guard during his conscript service, the young man was playing basketball for Promitheas Patron, his home city.

The Greek Presidential Guard, the Evzones, is a military unit standing sentry at the Tomb of Unknown Soldier in front of the Palriament in Athens as well as outside the official residence of the President of the Hellenic Republic.

In a statement, President Prokopis Pavlopoulos expressed his condolence to the family of the soldier.
