It poured down as meteorologists forecast: Heavy grey clouds gathered over Athens and Attica around 3 o’ clock Friday afternoon, thunder was heard, the sky opened and strong hail fall came down.
The hail intensity was so powerful that within minutes the streets were covered with little white frozen balls.
The hail hit downtown Athens and the suburbs Kamatero, Nea Filadelphia, Nia Ionia, Peristeri, Liosa, Fyli in the West.
The May storm was of rather short duration, but it brought enough water to flood the streets of downtown Athens and some suburbs of the Greek capital and create traffic jams.

The Fire Service reportedly received calls to pump water in Palaio Faliro, South Athens, and Menidi, West Athens.
According to Greece’s National Observatory of Athens, the rain and storm phenomena will continue until late Friday.
