New Democracy favors EU sanctions against Turkey

Greece’s main opposition party and potential winner of July elections, conservative New Democracy favors EU sanctions against Turkey. ND is reportedly closely monitoring the developments in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus and Turkey’s drilling provocations in drilling in the area.

Following the extraordinary meeting of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense on Sunday and the statements by prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, ND points out that leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis will bring the issue to the European People’s Party (EPP) at the European Parliament.

ND sources told media that if Ankara continues the challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, the question of EU sanctions against Turkey are inevitable.

“If Turkey continues to violate the sovereign rights of Cyprus in such an open way, Europe must penalize Turkey,” Mitsotakis told recently news24/7 radio. “I will go to EPP so that it can take the appropriate decisions, and even sanctions against Turkey if it is confirmed that drilling has taken place within the Cypriot EEZ.”

The next EPP session will take place towards the end of the week.

Greece and Cyprus are preparing the ground for EU sanctions against Turkey at the next Summit June 20-21, should it be confirmed that Turkey has started drilling in Cyprus EEZ, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced on Sunday.
