Greece’s main opposition party, conservative New Democracy (ND) continues lead in public opinion polls and with with a double-digit difference to ruling, left-wing SYRIZA.
According to the latest poll conducted by Marc on behalf of private ANT1 TV:
ND 34.3%
SYRIZA 23.8%
KINAL/PASOK 6.6%
KKE 5%
Golden Dawn 3.2%
Two newcomers, Yanis Varoufakis’ MeRA25 and the far-right Elliniki Lysi (Greek Solution) are showing to manage the 3%-threshold and enter the Greek Palriament with 3.4% and 3.2% respectively.
In an extrapolation of the results, based on valid responses, ND is given 35.1% and SYRIZA 24.4%, a difference of 10.7 percentage points.
If the results panned out, ND would field 156 seats in Greece’s 300-MP Parliament. The elections winning party receives also a bonus of 50 seats.
In majority of the polls conducted before the general elections on July 7, majority of Greeks favors a coalition government. Are Greeks scared of a sole party government that would rule without control? Yes, they probably are. Big parties right-wing ND and socialist PASOK have ruled for decades with devasting results for the Greek economy and the people. Left-wing SYRIZA’s power depends largely on a part of former PASOK voters and officials.
