Civil Protection warning “very high risk” for forest fires Aug 5-6

The heatwave is gone and north winds are bringing the much anticipated temperature decrease and a fresh breeze. This, of course, increase the risk of forest fires and the Greek Civil Protection has issued warning for August 5th and 6th, 2019.

North winds will be blowing in intensity of 4-6 Beaufort in the Aegean and locally up to 7B.

Warning August 5

At very high risk of forest fires are the islands of the East Aegean Sea and the east of Crete. Specifically the islands of:

• Samos, Ikaria, the Dodecanese and Lasithi Prefecture on Crete.

In regions marked with Yellow the risk of forest fires is “high”.

Warning August 6

Very high risk of forest fires on the islands of Chios, Samos, Ikaria, Deodecanese and Crete.

At “high risk” are the regions of Attica, Evia, Lakonia (Peloponnese) and the islands of Lesvos, Rhodes,the Cyclades group and Kythera.

Despite the continuous warnings, citizens seem to not often abide with restrictions and safety measures.

The Fire Service had to intervene in 50 wild fires across the country in the last 24 hours.

In one case, arsonists were at work. On Sunday, in Arhanes Municiplaity, Crete, police arrested a 37- and a 16-year-old for causing a forest fire. They had an arson device in heir vehicle.
