Six migrants were killed and ten were injured when a smuggling jeep carrying them through northern Greece crashed into an irrigation ditch.
The accident occurred on Monday evening outside the village of Loutra near the northeastern town of Alexandroupolis that is close to the Turkish border.
According to local media, the jeep increased speed in an effort to escape control by traffic police and at some point the driver lost control over the vehicle.
The 16 migrants were reportedly all men from Pakistan and Egypt.
In a statement the Greek health Ministry said that one of the injured migrants was in critical condition and in intensive care unit, while a second victim had serious injuries in the lung and chest.
Ten of the injured have fractures due to the traffic accident.
According to news agency ap, the two suspected smugglers, identified as a Bulgarian and an Algerian national, escaped on foot but were arrested shortly later in a nearby area. Local media report that both smugglers were Bulgarian nationals.
The migrants are believed to have entered illegally from Turkey.
