20,000 refugees will have been transferred from the islands to the mainland by the end of the year, Minister for Citizen Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, said on Thursday.
Transferred will be families that will be hosted in hotels and accommodation facilities. The option to host them in military camps has been reportedly ruled out.
According to the government plan, the refugees will be equally distributed among the country’s regions.
End of September a cabinet meeting had decided to relocate 40,000 refugees from the overcrowded islands camps “in the next two months.” The ambitious plan was supposed to be funded by the European Union.
Several local communities have objected the construction of new facilities for refugees in their areas.
