Coronavirus: Checks with infrared thermometers start in Athens Airport (video)

The first checks with infrared thermometers on passengers coming with direct flights from China to Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” started on Wednesday morning. The measure is being implemented in order to detect possible suspected cases of coronavirus.

A day earlier, Greek health authorities decided to step up surveillance measures at the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” to detect possible suspected cases of the ‘novel” coronavirus 2019-nCoV.

The measures by taken by the National Health Organization EDDY will apply to all direct flights from China. They will enhance the already existing measures of informing and sensitizing travelers.

The measures are:

1. Infrared thermometers  will be used to screen passengers and aircraft crew on selected flights.

2. Information posters (in two languages) posted at selected points in Arrivals and Departure sections of the Athens International Airport.

3. Distribution of leaflets with all the necessary information about the health services rpovided by Greece, including phone numbers. The leaflet is be in Chinese.

Minister of Health, Vasilis Kikilias, has reiterated several times on mainstream media that he cannot rule out arrival of the virus in the country.

Greece has taken a series of measures in order to tackle possible arrival of the corona virus with thirteen hospitals across the country to be ready to deal with such infections.

Recruitment of some 200 doctors, nurses, laboratory experts and paramedics in reportedly under way.

  1. Checking people with thermometers will make no difference to stopping the spread of the novel coronavirus because people who feel ill take medication to make them feel better. Often that medication is a fever reducer and the ill person, therefore, will read as normal.
