Owner of cram school arrested for violating coronavirus measures

Greek police arrested the owner of a cram school (frontistirio) in Ioannina, north-western Greece, for opening the school despite government orders to suspend operation of all schools including those offering tutorial classes.

The 53-year-old school owner was arrested on Thursday afternoon reportedly following a tip off.

Police arrested him, while he was holding a tutorial class for high-school students.

He is expected to to appear before a prosecutor on Friday.

According to ANT1 TV, also owners and teachers in cram schools in Grevena, also in Epirus, hav ebeen arrested for violating the measures. An average of 2 to 4 students were reportedly in the class.

The Supreme Court prosecutor informed other prosecutors throughout the country on Thursday that violating the measures imposed by Greece’s health authorities to contain the spread of coronavirus should be treated as a crime and prosecuted.

Punishment starts from 3-year imprisonment and fine and ends up to life behind bars.

According to data announce don Thursday, Greece has 117 confirmed coronavirus cases and one death. Three patients are in intensive care units in designated hospitals in Patras and Thessaloniki.
