12 unaccompanied migrant children left Athens for Luxembourg

A group of 12 unaccompanied children from overcrowded camps on Greek islands left for Luxembourg on Wednesday morning. Eight children are form Syria and four four from Afghanistan. Nine of them were in identification and reception center on the island of Lesvos, two on Chios and one on Samos.

The unaccompanied migrant children left the international airport of Athens on an Aegean airlines plane.

Speaking to media, deputy migrations minister Giorgos Koumoutakos said that the relocation process is particularly complex, complicated and time-consuming and involves the cooperation of national and international migration and other authorities in Greece and Luxembourg as well as like the European Commission, the European Asylum Support Service (EASO) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Additional problems arose due to the pandemic and made additional tests necessary.

A few months after the relocation reports on the children’s progress will be sent from Luxembourg

Another group of 50 children is scheduled to leave Athens for Germany on upcoming Saturday.

Eight of these children have already arrived in Athens with the first group, the rest is expected to travel form the islands in the next days.

There is a provisional accommodation for them in the Greek capital.
