Seismologists on the earthquake of 4.6R in Rhodes and 4.1R in Santorini

An earthquake measuring 4.6 on Richter scale jolted the island of Rhodes on Friday afternoon, and two hours later a tremor hit the island of Santorini with 4.1 on Richter scale.

The first earthquake stroke with 4.6 R rhodes at 4:16 p.m. Its epicenter was 31 km South-East of Lindos and its focal depth was 30 km.

The second earthquake stroke with 4.1 R at 6:23 p.m. and its epicenter was 24 km south-East of Santorini.

The two earthquakes are not connected, said director of Seismology Research at the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, Gerasimos Papadopoulos.

Speaking to news website enikos, Papadopoulos said that “the earthquake in Santorini was outside the volcano, therefore it is probably a tectonic one and not an earthquake related to the volcano.”

About the tremor in Rhodes, Papadopoulos said “this is a seismic activity in normal contexts, and added that the “two earthquakes are not connected. It is a coincidence that they occurred a short time apart. They do not mean anything, given that they appear as individual earthquakes. We are not worried, however, monitoring is continuing.”

Reassuring appeared the Head of the Greek Earthquake Planning and Prevention Authority, Efthimios Lekkas. He told  told cnn greece that no aftershock is expected in Rhodes. “We are not concerned about the tremor,” he added.
