254 new coronavirus cases, 2 more deaths; map of August infections

Greece’s health authorities announced 264 new coronavirus cases and 2 more deaths that occurred in the last 24 hours. According to a statement on Friday evening, the total infections have increased to 6,635 and death toll climbed to 223.

Two women infected with Covid-19 died in the last 24 hours. One of them, an 81-year-old was from the nursing home in Thessaloniki that now counts 3 fatalities.

Among the new cases 22 were detected among travellers.

The new cases in the last 24 hours could be considered as “good news” as the number of tests increased in compared to the previous days.More than double Although the new cases are lower than the high score of 265 on Wednesday, the news is not good as some 3,000 fewer tests were carried out in the last 24 hours.

Majority of the new cases were again detected in Attica (98).

Today, Friday, Greece announced a new series of measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus that currently seems hard to get under control. The measures are imposed also to some touristic destinations.

In addition, extraordinary measures were imposed on the islands of Paros and Antiparos in the Cyclades.

The Regional Government of Attica announced that it will carry out random Covid-19 tests among holidaymakers arriving at the ports of Piraeus and Rafina on Sunday, August 16, the day where summer vacations end for many Greeks.

For the first time, the National Health Care organization EODY published a map with the geographical distribution of infections for the month of August.
Map of the last 10 days (August 14): The geographic distribution is according to the permanent residence of the confirmed cases or the temporary residence for those temporary in Greece. The cases are per 100,000 people.

The new 254 cases in the last 24 hours have been detected:

20 at the entry points in Greece.

2 are travelers in Greece who fell ill and sought health facilities to undergo a test that turned positive.

The remaining new cases are spread across the country in over 30 regional units.

98 in Attica

76  in Thessaloniki: 4 are related to known cluster and 8 to travel within the country  – Later, EODY corrected the number to from 76 to 67.

9 in Evros: 8 of them related to known cluster

5 in Ilia

Each 4 in Argolida, Achaia, Pella

Each 3 in Imathia, Cyclades, Pieria

Each 2 in Aitoloakarnania, Heraklio, Kilkis,Levsos

Each 1 in Viotia, Grevena, Ioannina, Kavala, KEfalinia, Lefkada, Messinia, Serres, Fthiotida, Chios

To the infection of one worker at VIAL hot spot on Chios, one more infection was confirmed, this time to an asylum seeker from Yemen.

According to the Health Ministry statement on Friday, the daily growth is 4%

55% of the total of infected are men.

Of the total coronavirus cases, 1,592 (24%)  are related to travel abroad, 3,207 (48.4%) are related to an already known case. The rest are cases not related to travel or another known case or are still under investigation.

Average age of the infected in 49 with age range between 0 and 102.

The rolling average number of infections in the last 7 days is 200 from 116 last Friday, August 7.

Number of patients intubated in ICUs remains 22. Among them are 7 women. Average age of the intubated patients is 65.

59.1% of intubated patients had underlying health issues and age over 70 years.

The intubation from the 27-year-old doctor in Larissa has been removed.

136 patients have been discharged from the ICUs since the beginning of the outbreak.

Number of coronavirus-related deaths increased to 223 in last 24 hours.

Among the deceased were 77 women. The average age of the deceased was 77 with range age between 35 and 102.

96% had underlying health issues and/or were over 70 years old.


Total coronavirus tests since the beginning of the outbreak in February is 704,921 Of them 8.059 (1.1%) were positive – among them are several tests conducted to one patient.

Of 17,358 tests in the last 24 hours, 1.44% were positive.
