Dramatic night rescue in Kefalonia, swimmer and rescuer 6 hours in the water VIDEO

Dramatic night rescue at Myrto on Kefalonia: For six hours a swimmer and a life rescuer were struggling in a rough sea with winds blowing in intensity of 7 Beaufort. The battle that seemed uneven ended with a dramatic rescue by the crew of a helicopter of the Greek Air Force.

A 25-year-old dared into the sea at the beach of Myrto on the island of Kefalonia on Friday, despite the rough sea and the high waves. He was swept away and could no return ashore.

Around 8 o’ clock in the evening, alert signaled at the local rescuers and one of them jumped into the sea to save the man in the sea. However, the operation turned impossible also for the  rescuer.

“The swimmer did not feel well, at some point he got sea sick,” rescuer Ilia Papageorgopoulos told local media tempo24. ” I started to talk with him about several topics, about Olympiakos FC.”

Describing the horrifying moments at the sea and the risk that the waves would throw them to the rocks, the rescuer        said he was hoping that the other rescuers would come to their aid from the shore, but it was impossible due to the weather conditions.

“The situation was getting more and more difficult. The sound of waves did not let us hear anything. Then after 6 hours, we saw the Air Force helicopter in the sky,” Papageorgopoulos said.

In a dramatic rescue operation in the dark, the crew of the helicopter pulled both men out of the water and transferred them to safety.

  1. This was so moving and wonderful to see humans helping each other, risking their lives to do so in such a dangerous and despairing situation, loving each other instead of fighting, bless those rescuers.

  2. Glad the man is safe.
We go to Kefalonia all the time , but I would never go into the water at night .
