Restrictive coronavirus measures in Attica underway, says gov’t spokesman

Greece is preparing a list of restrictive measures to be imposed in areas with high coronavirus load, Greek government spokesman Stelios Petsas revealed on Monday morning adding that Attica is among these areas. Earlier today, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias said that there are thoughts to impose restrictions in municipalities of the largest regional unit in the country.

Speaking at Monday’s briefing to journalists, Petsas said that the epidemiological committee at the Health Ministry is compiling a list of restrictive measures to be applied in areas with a high viral load, including Attica.

He said that as the schools started today and there is a higher mobility among the population, the increased epidemiological burden in some areas, for example in Attica and Pella [western Macedonia] has put us on alert. The Prime Minister has asked the committee of experts to draw up a list of measures which will be scaled up locally or at general level if necessary.”

He added that the list will be ready today or tomorrow and will be announced by head of Civil Protection during the weekly briefing on Tuesday, September 15, 2020.

He said that there is a general outbreak in other countries and brought the example of France and “Israel that imposes a new 3-week lockdown, that closes schools and worship places, bans traffic 500 away from people’s residence and allows only essential shops to operate.”

Petsas stressed that Greece is monitoring the pandemic developments internationally. “We listen and trust the experts and we are ready to take whatever measure is needed, in order to maintain the best epidemiological picture that our country has consistently presented since the beginning of the pandemic.”

Earlier on Monday, Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias advised beforehand of the upcoming measures saying that “irrational horizontal measures can not be taken for the entire Attica Region,” home of 5 million people.

Stressing that half of the daily coronavirus cases are in Attica Kikilias said that “it is obvious that we can not think of taking such reckless horizontal measures for the entire Attica Region. We can intervene more locally, at the level of municipalities, with horizontal measures or with some specific measures so as to possibly reduce a local influx or an outbreak.”

The Region of Attica has reportedly recorded some 44% of the coronavirus infections during the last 7 days until September 12, 2020.

With 739 new cases in the week Sept 5-12, it had <19.5> cases per 100,000 people. Crucial is the marker <20>. This was apparently exceeded over the weekend.
