Coronavirus cases in Greece exceeded 50,000 on Friday as health authorities confirmed 2,448 news cases in the last 24 hours. In the same time, 14 more Covdi-19 patients died, while the number of intubated in ICUs increased to 196.
Health Ministry spokesman and professor for Epidemiology Hygiene Gkijas Majiorkinis said during the live briefing of Friday that the country’s health care system can afford up to 350″ Covid-19 patients in ICUs.
Total cases have reached 52,254 and death toll 715.
Current active cases are estimated at 23,000 with 80% to be of “unknown transmission source.”
The dramatic increase of infections, intubations and consequently deaths in the last 5 days forced the Greek government to impose a general lockdown as of November 7, 2020, and for three weeks.
Due to increased coronavirus infections in elderly care homes, the government said that rapid tests will be carried out in all such facilities across the countries.
The virus does not infect only the elderly but also the young ones. There are currently 6 children aged from 2 months to 12 years, hospitalized in Covid designated hospital Ippokratio in Thessaloniki. None of them is in ICU, however, one had developed pneumonia.

According to the official daily bulletin on Friday, 4369 (8.4%) of the total coronavirus cases are related to travel abroad and 15192 (29.1%) are related to already known infection case.
54.4% of the infected are men.
The number of intubated patients in ICUs increased to 196!!! from 187 a day earlier. Their average age is 66, among them are 45 women. 91.3% have underlying health problems or are aged over 70.
315 people have been discharged from ICUs since the start of the pandemic in Greece.
Fourteen more deaths in the last 24 hours increased death toll to 715*. Of the deceased 279 were women. The average age of the deceased was 79 and 96.5% of the deceased had an underlying condition or/and was over 70 years old.
*The difference to yesterday (702) comes after correction in deaths in the regional unit of Kozani
Total tests since begin of outbreak are 1,902,458.
Tests in the last 24 hours: 25,985 with 9.43% of them positive. A good, normal number with less reason for concerns is when positive is below 2%.

Of the 2448 new coronavirus cases, 0 are related to known clusters and 63 were detected at the country’s entry points.
63 of the new cases were detected at entry points; another 3 travelers already in the country sought laboratories after they developed symptoms.
