Egyptian, Greek Naval Forces in joint drill in Mediterranean Sea

Egyptian and Greek naval forces conducted joint military training in the northern Mediterranean Sea, in efforts to reinforce the exchange of expertise with the armed forces of friendly countries.

The drill was conducted as the Egyptian naval units were on their way back from another training “Friendship Bridge-3″ with the Russian navy that concluded last week in the Black Sea.

The Egyptian military issued a statement indicating that the training included sailing formations and transportation to enhance maritime security measures in the Mediterranean. It also aims to achieve compatibility between both countries’ fleets in carrying out combat missions as per international rules.

The military spokesman said that the training contributes t the exchange of expertise with the Greek side, and benefits from bilateral capabilities in achieving the common interests of both countries.

He also indicated that it improves military cooperation between the Egyptian and Greek naval forces.

Egypt is seeking to boost its maritime capabilities in the Mediterranean, amid rising regional disputes with Turkey, against the backdrop of Ankara’s gas explorations in the disputed Eastern Mediterranean.

Egypt carried out several military exercises, most recently in November with French naval forces in the northern fleet region in the Mediterranean. [aawsat]
