Greece records 816 new coronavirus cases, 48 more deaths

Greece’s health authorities announced on Wednesday, 816 new coronavirus cases and another 48 deaths in the last 24 hours. The number of Covid-19 patients intubated in hospitals across the country stands at 399.

Death toll has reached 5,099 and the total cases stand at 142,267.

New infections started to rise again as authorities increased the number of daily testing following massive testing decrease relaxation over the Christmas and New Year days.

However, the coronavirus does not know of holidays and kept on infecting people with the effect that the Civil Protection placed several areas in West Attica, Kozani, Rodopi and Sitia/Lasithi in quarantine due to increased epidemiological load.

Despite the slow resurgence and while the impact of the holidays over the pandemic is not fully seen yet, Greeks flocked to churches on Wednesday to celebrate the Blessing of the Waters on Epiphany day. Phenomena of crowding in- and outside  churches were seen. In some cases, priests and bishops defied the laws of the state and the instructions of the official Church of Greece and celebrated as the tradition dictates.
