Argolida and Sparti in tougher lockdown due to infections increase

Greece’s Civil Protection placed the Regional Unit of Argolida and the Municipality of Sparti, in eastern and south Peloponnese respectively, into a regime of stricter lockdown measures due to a high epidemiological load and the rapid increase in epidemiological indicators of the last seven days.

The measures are taken for  urgent reasons of addressing a serious risk to public health and in particular to limit the spread of the effects of COVID-19, a statement said.

The measures are:

Overnight curfew from 06:00 p.m. until 05:00 a.m. Exception workers going from home to work and vice versa.

Ban of travel outside the boundaries of the Regional Unit of Argolida and the Municipality of Sparti except for health reasons.

Suspencion of religious services

Suspension of operation of retail stores etc.

The measures will go into effect at 06:00 a.m. on Thursday, 14. January 2021, and 06:00 a.m. Monday, 18. January 2021.

The Regional authorities will provide basic goods and pharmaceuticals to local residents in need, including home-bound residents with chronic health issues and low-income families, the Civil Protection said.

The epidemiological situation will be evaluated at a meeting on Friday, Jan 15, the statement said.

Argolida is the third regional unit placed in tough lockdown after Lesvos and Viotia in the last three days.

According to local media argolikeseidiseis, the community in Argolida was caught by surprise by the “sudden decision” of the Civil Protection saying that “only 4 new cases” were recorded on Tuesday.

A pupil at an elementary school in Nafplio was tested positive to Covid-19 on the third day of the schools reopening. The class operation was suspended. But this is halrdy the reason for the tougher lockdown.

As for Sparti, local media reported on Tuesday that 8 patients with Covid-19 are hospitalized in the hospital of Sparti, the capital of the Regional Unit of Laconia.
