Greece’s newly refurbished National Gallery ready to welcome visitors

Greece’s newly refurbished National Gallery-Alexandros Soutsos Museum in Athens is ready to welcome visitors when epidemiological data allows for the opening of all museums, the Greek Culture Ministry said in a statement issued on Friday.

The emblematic works for the expansion and renovation of the building “impressed visitors and spectators on March 24, in the launch of celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821,” said the ministry.

When fully open, the public will have the opportunity to see the permanent collection of the National Gallery and works from the interwar period, it added.

Some 1,000 unique works of art are on show in the permanent collection, along with a temporary exhibition showcasing works related to the Greek Revolution, it was noted.

The National Gallery opened its gates to a limited number of exquisite guests like the Greek President and the Prime Minister, Prince Charles and the Russian PM on the eve of the National Day March 25.

The opening for handful of VIPs and entourage marked of the celebrations for the 200-year anniversary of the Greek Revolution. The Greek art of 19th and 20th century is hosted in the new National Gallery, develops alongside the history of free Greece and the establishment of the Greek state”.

Refurbishing started in 2013.

Last week, the government allowed the reopening of archaeological sites, however, the museums remain closed.
