Experts to announce this week decisions on travel during Easter holidays

Greece’s health experts will announce this week the measures over the Easter holidays and during church services, government spokesperson Aristotelia Peloni said on Monday. She stressed the the Epidemiologists’ Committee evaluates all the data, including the latest ones, and advises the government accordingly.

We are in a very fragile balance and we must all contribute to stopping the spread of the virus. Constant vigilance, the avoidance of gatherings, the universal use of the mask, good ventilation of enclosed spaces but also a preference for outdoor spaces are basic measures of individual and collective protection,” Peloni said.

Two weeks before the Orthodox Easter on May 2, and lockdown-ridden Greece are eager to know whether they will be allowed to travel to the countryside and the islands, where many have their second family home. Others just waiting for the lifting of inter-regional travel restrictions to visit their families they haven’t see since October 2020.

However, experts appear divided over the prospect of easing pandemic restrictions and allow traveling to regions different than the one where the residence is.

Some of them say that lifting the travel ban would undermine effort to contain the spread of Covid-19 ahead of the country’s official opening of the tourism season on May 14.
Others say that the current governmental policy mix against Covid-19 is no longer sustainable, as pandemic fatigue has taken the better of lockdown compliance.
They reportedly suggest that citizens with a negative Covid-19 self-test be allowed to travel between prefectures for Easter.
Meanwhile, Greece unofficially opened to tourism on April 19 by lifting the 7-day quarantine to travelers from EU and Schengen Agreement countries and another 5 non-EU.
Spokesperson Peloni said on Monday that tourists are obliged to comply with the same measures as the Greeks. Tourists are not allowed to travel between regions either, she stressed.
