Alonissos: Tourist hospitalized after bitten by a seal she wanted to stroke

A foreign tourist was taken to the Volos hospital after she was bitten by a seal in the marine park of Alonissos on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old woman from Bulgaria was sailing near the islet of Kyra Panaghia when she saw the seal and tried to get close enough to stroke the animal.

The seal was alarmed by her approach, however, and attacked her, biting her legs, state-run news agency amna reports on Wednesday.

The woman’s friends took her to the Skopelos health center, which arranged for her transfer to a hospital in Volos.

The wild seals live in a protected area in the island of Alonissos and are usually very friendly with people, making this a very rare incident, notes the news agency.

According to the Hellenic Society for the Study and Protection of the Monk Seal (MOm), there are certain things one can do and not do if one sees a seal, so that both species are safe.

PS However, wildlife is wildlife and one should leave it alone….

  1. It never ceases to amaze me what tourists will do. As you say wildlife is wildlife so leave them alone. Use the brain cells you were born with!

  2. I knew the tourists were sensible. lol

  3. A very unfortunate thing, and quite frightening however you wouldn’t,t put your hand out to a dog in the street without risking a nip or two.

  4. Most likely another YouTube based injury. She probably watched one of those videos where some diver befriends a seal and based her full knowledge of seals on that. Common sense – what common sense?
