Greece’s Justice Ministry proceeds with new amendments in the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure. The amendments foresee stricter penalties for heinous crimes, sexual crimes, crimes against minors and gender based violence.
They also provide for an extension of the time of release under conditions for serious offenders and those convicted to life sentence. They will have to have served 4/5 of the sentence.
They will not be allowed to serve at home with surveillance.
Among others, the amendments plan to turn arson into a felony.
According to an announcement by the Ministry of Justice, the amendments in both Codes proposed by Justice Minister Konstantinos Tsiaras and ratified by the cabinet meeting will be immediately put to public consultation.
The stricter penalties come after the recent brutal murders of two young women as well as a wave of denouncements of sexual crimes by victims, including minors.
