Delta variant accounts for 79.1% of new cases, says Greek expert

The Delta variant of Covid-19 has become the dominant strain in Greece, accounting for 79.1 percent of new cases, said Charalambos Gogos, an infectious disease specialist and member of the Covid-19 Εpidemiologists Committee.

Gogos told a press briefing that the Delta variant will soon reach 90 percent, which is faster than the scientific community expected.

At the same time, the infectious disease expert added that the number of hospitalizations doubled in the last 20 days.

In its latest report published on Thursday, August 12, the  National Network of Genomic Surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 said the genomic analysis of 891 randomly selected or targeted samples during July 2- 31, 2021, showed a total of 823 samples with Variants Of Concern (VOC), 24 samples with Variants Under Monitoring and 3 samples with Variant of Interest (VOI).

Of the 823 VOC samples: 707 relate to the Delta strain, 90 relate to Alpha, 24 relate to Beta and 2 relate to Gamma.

All 24 VUM samples relate to strain B.1.1.318 (Variant E484K).

All 3 VOI samples relate to B.1.621.

In addition, 1 strain B.1.629, 1 strain B.1.575 and 1 strain B.1.1 (Variant E484K) were detected.
