Minor earthquake jolts Athens, particularly felt due to low focal depth

An earthquake jolted the city of Athens at 15:52 on Monday afternoon, said the National Observatory of Athens’ Geodynamic Institute. The tremor registered a 2.9 magnitude on the Richter scale 10 km northeast of Athens.

The earthquake had a focal depth of 5km and was, therefore, particularly felt, however, as it seems in the northern suburbs of Athens.

According to reports, the epicenter was under the auxiliary court of OAKA Olympics sports center.

Head of the National Organization for Earthquake Planning and Protection (OASP), Efthymios Lekkas, said that the epicenter was located north of the Olympics Stadium. He added that the earthquake was felt [strongly] as it was inside the urban fabric and expressed the assessment that this particular fault line can not give tremors with big magnitude.

Seismologists monitor the phenomenon and evaluate whether it is in connection with the fault line on Parnitha mountain, state broadcaster ERT reported.

The quake’s magnitude was initially reported at 2.8 on the Richter scale 12 km northeast of Athens, but was revised a short while later by the Hellenic Unified Seismic Network.
