Snow weather: Some schools in Attica closed on Friday; heavy trucks banned from highway parts

Primary and secondary schools in parts of northern, eastern and western Attica will remain closed also on Friday, March 11, due to snow weather “Philip”, regional authorities announced on Thursday. Hay trucks are banned from highway parts as of 10 p.m. Thursday.

According to a statement by the Attica regional government, with the exception of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, schools will remain closed in the regional units of North and East Attica.

Regarding West Attica, schools will be closed in the municipality of Filis as well as in the municipal units of Vilia and Erythrae.

All other primary and secondary education schools will operate as usual.

Snow fell not only in the semi-mountainous areas of Attica on Thursday morning, like in Vilia below but also in downtown Athens and even the southern suburbs.

The Civil Protection has warned of snow storm on Thursday night to Friday, calling on residents of Attica, Viotia, Fthiotida and Evia to avoid unnecessary travel and use snow chains.

Heavy trucks are forbidden as of 10 p.m. Thursday night, March 10, in parts of Athens-Lamia highway, in Attiki Odos, the western section of Hymettus ring avenue and the ring of Aegaleo, authorities reportedly decided.

The National Meteorological Service has warned that snowfall locally, low temperatures with temporary frost will continue until Sunday, March 13. 2022.

From Friday and over the weekend, snowfalls are forecast for the will continue in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas as well as low altitude areas in eastern mainland, Evia, the Sporades, northern and eastern Aegean islands, the Cyclades and Crete.
