Dozens of vegans gathered at Syntagma Square in downtown Athens to protest against the slaughter and consumption of lamb on Easter Sunday.
Holding placards reading “I have pain” and “Slaughter is not love” the protesters lined up in rows at Syntagma Square to express their opposition to the long-standing Greek tradition of roasting lamb on the spit on Easter Sunday.
They said that the custom was “barbaric.”
Protesters on Wednesday afternoon also called on Greeks to oppose this custom.
they should get a life, do they know vegatables are living things they feel pain but you do not hear cut t veg and it bleeds beetroot bleeds red when cut onions you cry it juices are blood
Bullshit
Total bullshit…I agree !!! He is on a plant with 3 leaves and a distinct smell !!
Get a Life? how about STOP TAKING LIVES in such concentration over some archaic verse and tradition!
Given that plants do not have pain receptors, nerves, or a brain, they do not feel pain as we members of the animal kingdom understand it.
Uprooting a carrot or trimming a hedge is not a form of botanical torture, and you can bite into that apple without worry. (Britannia)
The feeling and level of pain a Lamb would experience from being slaughtered and hung up while the blood drains away would be no different to your own. Hey Victor, how about taking part in a study to compare?
These people get my FULL SUPPORT.
Lamb? What about all the pork, chicken, and beef? How selective. Why not impose wacko consumption views here too?
The human body can not remain vegan, otherwise they it require vitamin B12 injections. It is healthy to eat meat, and eggs and such, a healthy diet does not consist of vegetables alone but requires real protein.
Lastly, don’t let them snow you with barbarism, this is excellent delicious and nutritious meat.
No one is forcing them to consume it so leave others (the healthy vast majority) alone than protest on fabrication. The preparation is quick and humane, there are laws concerning the proper preparation.
There are wackos in all walks of life from truck convoys to these vegans to name it.
thank you very much vegans! because it’s a massacre. all those lambs that we saw around us running, playing, grazing, calling to their mothers, celebrating life, spring finally arriving for them who were born in winter, from one day to the next it’s emptiness, silence and we know why… torn from their distraught mothers, sometimes transported in bundles (I saw this in Tinos, on the side of the road in the sun, “bundles” of lambs and sheep tied together, lying like that, waiting for a truck to pick them up to take them to death), their throats slit in panic, suffering. to celebrate one’s god with a massacre of the most innocent is neither honourable nor decent. even if it is symbolic,it is barbaric and unworthy of our civilisation. so…thank you very much vegans!

Everybody is entitled to their own views and to express those views but I think the clue is in the first sentence:
“Dozens of vegans gathered at Syntagma Square…”
Greece is a country of some 11 million people.
Well Warwick, that just says it all doesn’t it?
It is not nice to mock low numbers. Most people cheered for Barabbas. How did that work out?
Here’s a few famous vegans; well some of the ones I have heard of. Seems like a few MMA (mixed martial arts) fighters are also vegan.
Al Gore
Alicia Silverstone
Benedict Cumberbatch
Brian May
Carl Lewis
Colin Kaepernick
Daryl Hannah
David Haye (boxer)
Demi Moore
Graeme Souness
Heather Mills
Jason Gillespie (cricket)
Joaquin Phoenix
Lewis Hamilton
Michelle Pfeiffer
Morrissey
Natalie Portman
Peter Ebdon (snooker)
Ricky Gervais
Russell Brand
Sinéad O’Connor
Woody Harrelson
Quite an interesting list (source, wiki – *list = dynamic)
Any list that isn’t full of narcissistic, selfie taking self publisists ..
lol, I don’t know what you mean, famous people tend to strive for publicity (hence, why they are famous) and have agents and PR managers so yes they will be the narcissistic type. Not saying they would all be on my Christmas Card list.
and pythagore and plutarchos !!!
All wackos… good point.
The narrative of the few thrush on the many, fundamentalism of the worst kind . Shame of you ,protecting the lambs whilst African children die from disease cured by the cost of your fuel bill to demonstrate.
Well I’m bloody well looking forward to my lamb I can tell you!
I have known of MANY people who will NEVER visit Greece again because of cruelty to animals.
What does Greece rely on for most income…..TOURISTS !!
Perhaps it is time to respect more of all GOD’S creatures ?? Cruelty to humans or animals has no place in the world.
In reply ,the concept that we are god’s creatures has no reasonable evidence at all, but your narratives are far more important than the beliefs of others , this article perfectly demonstrates this fact.
The tourism industry makes up 18 % of Greece’s GDP ,”MOST” is over 50%.
Vegans make up 1% of the world’s population, about the same number of people which do not have access to clean drinking water or healthcare.
I don’t imagine after a few pints of ouzo ,that the average tourist gives a rub what’s in his kebab, what does bother them is the gardens of fundermentalists full of dogs keeping everybody awake within a square mile ,but it’s their inexorable right to be selfish . Happy Easter bon appetit.
I don’t have a problem with vegans at all. More lamb chops for the rest of us.
Well said!
I know a lot of religious ppl who have been fasting from all animal products since clean Monday, and essentially being vegans. So yes, the tradition is for lamb (and goat), but the tradition also includes a long stretch of veganism before the feast.
Being selfish is more about not considering when others suffer, bleed, and lose their lives thsn about preserving a tradicion that keep eyes blind to it. It doesn”t matter if vegans are 1 or 2% of the populacional in the world. Justice is not about a majority supporting something unfair…Just remember what the crowds supported when Pontius Pilatos presented Christ to them
It would be good if people have to kill and clean it before they can eat it. I tell ya it taste really different. I would eat allot less, come to think of it I would only eat fish that way. Yes fishies are sad too but they won’t make a sound when I bash in their heads. But still feels weird when they die in your hands, they tremble like female massage equipment.
There are some sad people about.
