British newspaper “The Times” has published a list of the top ten Greek islands for a quiet, relaxing holiday far from the throng. The island of Andros is listed on top as the most authentic one
Andros is praised for its countryside, footpaths and welcoming inhabitants.
The list also includes Folegandros for its sunsets, Nisyros for its volcanic views, Syros for its cultural life, Meganisi for its peaceful, laid-back atmosphere, Alonissos for its wild life, Milos for its otherworldly landscapes, Agistri for excursions, Kythera for its idyllic environment and Patmos for its spiritual mystique and its beautiful beaches.
“We have started a constant and organized effort for openness, as Andros offers everything that both Greek and foreign travelers want in the post-Covid era, such as activities in nature, a mix of remote and organized beaches and, above all, authentic hospitality. After a satisfactory season, tourist flows are continuing in September as well,” Andros Deputy Mayor for Tourism Nikos Moustakas said.
The mayor of Patmos, Lefteris Pentes, said the combination of natural beauty and UNESCO World Heritage monuments, as well as an intense spirituality, left no visitor to the island unmoved.
Andros is too windy! Patmos is the definite winner for me, definitely in my top 5 favorite islands.
Syros for history, culture and hospitality. But please don’t sell more of your special country to tourism. Keep some for yourselves.
Why is Tinos not among them? It is a cultural center, with unusual geography along with hundreds of restored ,medieval signposted footpaths. A culinary destination too?
All the Greek islands are beautiful in their own way. The common thread is the friendliness of the locals.
