ExxonMobil to start surveys for natural gas in the next days, says Mitsotakis

In the next few days, seismic surveys for natural gas fields in Greece will begin by ExxonMobil, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis revealed in an interview with ANT1 on Monday evening.

The PM pointed out that “we are in a position to tell you that seismic surveys for the exploration of natural gas fields will begin immediately. When I say immediately, I mean in the next few days, in the two plots which are located southwest of the Peloponnese and Crete, by ExxonMobil.”

He added that “our country – as I have said many times – regardless of its commitment to the rapid green transition, must investigate whether it currently has the possibility to extract natural gas, which will contribute not only to our energy security, but to Europe’s energy security as well. Therefore, these surveys will be initiated by ExxonMobil in the coming days.”

Citing sources media report that the goal is to make a drilling decision in 2024 and conduct the first exploratory well in 2025.

  1. A country with enough sunshine to power the whole economy year round…. insists that drilling the oceans for more fossil fuels is the way forward.

And before anyone tells me green energy is a fairy tale, I’ll point you to Costa Rica, now in its 7th year of renewables powering 98% the entire country

    It just takes political will.
