First ND legislation to make digital communication between public and administration easier

The first two bills prepared by the newly-elected Greek government will strive to make communication between citizens and public administration easier and more digital, Minister of State Makis Voridis said in two televised interviews on Tuesday and late on Monday night.

Speaking on Mega channel on Monday, Voridis said the government’s first bill will tweak and improve the executive functioning of the government while the second will concern a code of administrative procedures.

“This is a piece of legislation that is complete, was ready and is very good. [It concerns] the way in which citizens communicate with public administration. We are making it easier, more digital and incorporating many things that the Council of State said regarding these issues,” he said.

The same bill will also make changes to the system for selecting managerial staff in the civil service, he added, seeking to insert more “meaningful criteria from assessments” instead of the previous “predominance of formal criteria.”

Talking to ANT1 television channel on Tuesday morning regarding the duties assigned to him by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Voridis said they include representing the prime minister in Parliament and the “unification of legislative work”.

On the entry of the “Spartans” party into Parliament, he denied that this was a failure of legislation designed to block the participation in the elections of convicted felon Ilias Kasidiaris, jailed for his role in the far-right criminal organization Golden Dawn. He also noted that he is “listening to the concerns” regarding the specific party and how it should be dealt with, and that “it is something that is taken into account.”

PS they can open 1000s of digital platforms – but they will be in vain if no staff operates them.

  1. While I am all in favour of better administrative systems some care is needed. Each improvement lessens the need for other means of communication so those channels are progressively removed. This is fine as long as the new methods work in 100 % of situations. Eventually, however, you hit a situation where the new method doesn’t work but there is no other method available. They have to maintain an effective backstop. I speak from experience.
