Greece’s Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) will begin tax audits on all those who in 2021 declared family incomes of up to 10,000 euros. This concerns about 3.8 million taxpayers, who will be subject to electronic cross-checking of their accounts as AADE officials consider that these conceal a still unknown number of cases of extensive tax evasion.
Where indications of suspected tax evasion are found, more careful scrutiny will follow in the autumn.
According to AADE statistics for the 2021 tax declarations, which were recently made public, almost 7 out of 10 self-employed professionals, but also 6 out of 10 households declare incomes that do not exceed 10,000 euros a year to the tax office, paying very little income tax.
Last year, freelancers last year declared a total taxable income of 4.3 billion euros when, based on ELSTAT data, their turnover is almost tenfold that amount.
PS tax audits should better start with doctors and lawyers right away.
how about starting the audits with big, often foriegn, corporations? how about going straight down the lagarde list one by one?
