Record maximum temperature was recorded on Sunday, July 23, in Gythio, south Peloponnese. It is the 4th highest temperature recorded in Greece.
A new maximum temperature record was recorded on Sunday, July 23, 2023 in the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr.
The absolute maximum temperature recorded in Gythio, which was equal to 46.4 degrees Celsius is the new maximum temperature record in the records that began in 2006.

This value is also the 4th highest temperature in Greece on record (see Figure 2).
An important fact is also that the maximum temperature record is broken for the 2nd time in 3 years (the previous one was on 02/08/2021), with the prospect of being broken again in the next few days.

180 stations recorded over 40 °C – 87 stations over 42 °C – New maximum temperature record in Gythio with a value of 46.4 °C,
At the peak of the second phase of the heat wave on Sunday 23/07, according to the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.gr, the maximum temperature values exceeded 40 °C in many areas. As can be seen in Figure 1, 180 meteorological stations recorded maximums above 40 ºC, while 87 of them had maximum temperatures exceeding 42 ºC. The absolute maximum temperature was recorded in Gythio and was equal to 46.4 ºC.
This record is also the highest temperature that has been recorded historically in the network of automatic weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens / Meteo.gr since 2006.
The previous record was set in Makrakomi Fthiotida on August 2, 2021 with a value of 46.3 ºC.
