“Very High Fires Risk” in nine Greek regions on Aug 8 (MAP)

A very high fire danger (risk category 4) has been forecast for Tuesday in nine regions of Greece, according to the Fire Danger Forecast Map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Climate Crisis and Civil Protection ministry.

The regions with a high fire danger include:

  • Attica
  • Central Greece (especially Evia, Viotia, Fthiotida)
  • Thessaly (Magnesia, Sporades)
  • Peloponnese (Messinia)
  • Western Greece (Achaia, Ilia)
  • Ionian Islands
  • Central & Eastern Macedonia (Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Mt Athos,
  • Thrace, North Aegean (Evros, Samothraki, Thassos)
  • East Aegean islands (Lesvos, chios, Limnos)

In regions marked “Yellow” the risk of fires is “High”, category 3.

According to meteorologists, the August northern winds – meltemia- are forecast start again as of tomorrow, Tuesday, August 8, and to blow with intensity of 7 to 8 and locally even 9 Beaufort.

It is recalled that the fire season in Greece ends at the end of October and starting a fire outdoors or do agricultural or other works that cause sparks are absolutely forbidden.

  1. I have been in Crete for the last 3 weeks which included the intense heatwave and red alert fire risk. BBQs are banned and even deliveries have been severely restricted due to the heat. I have also just read your article stating the continued danger of fire until October, and despite all this I have heard 3 firework parties and events in Crete. This is so absurd i cannot quite believe that this is not banned., it must be the most dangerous thing to have at the moment.

      Where are you staying on Crete Chania by any chance? We were there for the entire month of May and it was unseasonably cold.
