Wildfires on Crete partly under control (video)

Firefighters were still trying to put out a fire on Wednesday evening that broke out in the afternoon between the villages of Venerato and Kiparissi in Heraklio  prefecture on the island of Crete.

The fire started burning low brush in an area called Sinapi. A total of 13 firefighters with the equal number of firetrucks are on site, while two airplanes dowsed the area with water during daylight hours.

The flames are not threatening any community in the area, firefighters said.

According to the latest information from the Fire Service, ten engines with the corresponding personnel remain at the scene and are operating monitoring possible rekindling, local media cretalive.gr reported on Thursday morning.

Kato Kalyvia, Crete

A fire that broke out earlier in the day at Kato Kalyvia in Axharnes Asterousion in southern Crete, was partially contained after burning 1.5 hectares (15 stremmas) of farmland, 0.30 hectares of low brush, and 0.2 hectares of forestland, the Fire Brigade said.

Fighting the blaze in the area were 70 firefighters with 25 firetrucks, with 2 rough terrain teams, 2 special forest operations units, the Ikaros service of regional firefighting services, 5 water trucks and 5 heavy machinery from the local government. Before nightfall, 2 helicopters also assisted with water dropping.
