Greece has been experiencing a prolonged fair weather all through the winter, so far, with sunny days and temperatures over 15 degrees Celsius even if with short intervals of bad weather.
It is the first time ever that quite some plants on my balcony are blooming in January, and the first time in last five year, my Bird of Paradise, Strelitzia, started blooming in December and we now enjoy a proud plant with four flowers and another three buds preparing more joy.

Normally this meteorological phenomenon of sunny days with clear blue skies and warm temperatures up and over 20° Celsius during the day in the middle of January is called “Alkyonides.”
Two years in the balcony, now it’s blooming.
However, meteorologists warn that the “spring weather” will continue in some regions with temperatures up to 22 degrees still on Friday, January 19, and then the weather will abruptly deteriorate within 24 hours with snowfalls even in lower altitudes.
According to latest forecast data, bitter cold is expected to prevail on Saturday, January 20, mainly in the north of the country, while the central and southern regions will keep bathing in sun and warmth.
Current temperatures are reportedly 6 degrees higher than the seasonal average.

Snow and strong winds up to 9 Beaufort are forecast for Saturday in the North, while on Sunday the bad weather front will move toward the South.
Rainfalls are expected locally initially in the North and gradually from Saturday afternoon in the rest of the country except Crete.
Snowfalls will start also from Saturday afternoon in the northern mainland areas in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas. In the evening hours, the phenomena in the central and northern areas will intensify.
There will be also sporadic storms in the sea and coastal areas.
Sunday, Jan 20
On Sunday rainfalls and sporadic storms in the eastern and southern coastal areas.
In the central and northern continental areas, snowfalls will occur in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, while they will also gradually occur in the highlands of Peloponnese, Evia and western Crete.
The phenomena will gradually weaken from the afternoon and stop in the northeast.
Winds
From Saturday noon, the winds will turn north-northeast and will strengthen in the northern Aegean to 7 and from the evening hours to 8 Beaufort.
On Sunday, N-NE winds are forecast to blow with intensity 5 – 7 Beaufort, in the Aegean Sea 8 B and locally 9 B.
