Greece “will not allow revival of terrorism” says minister after bomb explosion

“We will not allow a revival of terrorism,” said Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chryssochoidis after a bomb exploded in downtown Athens in the early morning hours of Saturday.

Speaking to Skai TV, Chryssochoidis did not provide information on the bomb explosion opposite the Labor Ministry on Stadiou Avenue, one of the main streets in the center of Athens.

“We have lived through these things in the past. We must never experience them again. We will not allow this case to revive,” the minister stressed.

The bomb went off at 1:29 a.m. on Saturday causing material damage to nearby buildings, shattering windows. Nobody was injured.

Authorities estimated that 3 to 5 kg of explosives were used.

Forty minutes earlier, an unknown person, claiming to represent “Revolutionary Class Self-Defense”, a previously unknown organization, made a warning call to the Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper, saying an explosive device had been placed near the ministry.

The newspaper immediately informed police, who cordoned off the area.

Media reported that the explosive device was in a bag, which had been placed on the railings in front of a bank.

On Monday, media reported that CCTV footage showed two people on a motorbike leaving the bomb.
