The national defense sector needs profound reforms and these will focus also on artificial intelligence (AI), National Defense Minister Nikos Dendias told the Greek parliament’s National Defense Committee on Tuesday during a briefing.
He stressed that the structure of the Armed Forces must be reorganized and underlined that the ministry is oriented towards the modernization of communications and the use of satellite communications.
The minister said that Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA) will create a new branch, the “branch of post-evolution, innovation and defense technology” and that a new administrative structure will be created to systematically integrate the use of autonomous systems.
The special units that will be created will include both equipment and training and will not only function as Special Forces units but will be able to help society even in cases of natural disasters.
Dedias informed the committee that in the next few days a Joint Information Technology Corps will be established, which will also focus on artificial intelligence, so that it is possible for national defense to be able to respond to the challenges of the times.
A Department of Computer Science will also be established in the Military School of Officers, he said.
