Does the city of Athens have the best smell among other capitals in Europe? Apparently it has as a recent research found out that Athens is the best-smelling city in Europe and topped the list of 10 best among 30 competitors in total.
A recent study by vape company Haypp has shed light on this overlooked aspect of urban life, analyzing 30 major cities in Europe and beyond to figure out which one is the sweetest-smelling of them all.
Researchers looked into factors including cleanliness and proportion of flower shops, bakeries and perfume shops to give each city a ‘smell score’.
The city of Athens topped the list as the world’s best-smelling city, reaching the highest score of 8.3 out of 10!
Athens has a high number of bakeries with the smell of sweet and savory products slipping to the streets, it boasts with 31 flower shops and 22 perfumeries per 10 square kilometers. This means that delicate fragrance lingers around every corner of the city.
All in all the city receives high scores in the different categories even if it has some issues with the cleanliness.
On the top ten best smelling cities, the Greek capital is followed by Paris and Zurich in third position.
These are the top 10 best-smelling cities in the world

PS I have no idea where exactly Haypp-sniffers walked around and in which areas of the Greek capital as well as the seasonal time. But whatever… I don’t want to be mean so I ask you in a poll:
I take it they didnt go near that fish and meat market, the stench from there on a hot day will leave you needing a bottle of oxygen. It aint the smell of roses thats for sure,my brother came from australia for a visit,we went down there and he started running like the road runner cartoon,I called after.him…ouy, you get used to it,dont be afraid…
I cannot comment on Athens, so I haven’t voted, but the fact that Paris came second suggests to me that the study is extremely flawed. Paris smells awful. I suspect that there were no sniffers and that it is a purely theoretical study based on the idea that if there is a high spatial density of nice smelling sources then it must smell nice. That theory doesn’t take into account the spatial density of foul smelling sources.
Strange, all I smelt was pollution !
Yes. Pollution, overflowing rubbish bins and tobacco…
