Police arrested a doctor and his wife accusing them of starting six to eight fires in Nea Marki seaside resort in eastern Attica. The teenager son of the wife is being sought by police as accomplice.
It was initially the 61-year-old orthopedic doctor and his 50 year-old who were arrested on Monday following complaints to authorities by their neighbors.
Both have been reportedly arrested for at least six arson in low vegetation areas of neighboring houses and thus in the time from May to September 1, 2024.
Video footage captured the doctor moving his vehicle that was parked outside his house twice before fires broke out.
The 16-year-old son of the doctor’s wife is being sought by police still on Wednesday. The teenager has allegedly set two fires early Sunday morning near the house where the family lived. A neighbor claimed that he saw the boy starting two fires in dry grasses.
Citing sources from the fire Department, state broadcaster ERT reported that the family had conflicts with three of their neighbors and that is why someone from the doctor’s family started the fires with open flame.
The doctor reportedly told police he knew nothing about the fires that occurred while he was sleeping. Also his partner declared to know nothing about the fires.
However, the public prosecutor prosecuted charged them for arson with intent, and they to testify tomorrow, Thursday.
So far, they have been imposed an administrative fine of 2,320 euros each.
