A student at a school in western Greece, received a one-day suspension on Monday for using a cell phone in the class.
It is the first punishment of this kind since the new legislation came into effect less than a week ago.
The incident took place in the secondary education school in Magoula in the Prefecture of Achaia, north-western Peloponnese.
The student’s parents filed a complaint against the school principal and made the case public.
The parents questioned the decision, asking to know who reported the incident to the school principal who on his turn ordered the suspension and the teachers’ association, what was the opinion of the teacher who was present.
They also questioned the fact that they were not informed by the principal on the incident and complained that neither the student nor they received any recommendations nor the school community was informed by the school on the new regulations banning the use of cell phones in school.
“It is unfair,” the students father told media, among others.
The legislation provides that cell phones remain in the school bag during classes and breaks. it should be recalled that the ban exists in the last 15 years, however, it was apparently never implemented as many “laws” and “legislation” in this country. The new thing is the punishment and it is up to the principal to decide.
Education authorities have said to investigate the issue.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that lockers will be installed in schools where students will deposit their cell phones.
Internet users but also teachers complained on social media about the broken infrastructure in many schools in Greece, recall falling ceilings or lack of space and ironically noting: What was missing in our schools today are lockers!

“British journalist Decca Aitkenhead’s experiment with 10 teenagers giving up smartphones for a month resulted in increased energy, focus and maturity, highlighting the benefits of digital detox” – I suspect even a small daily “deprivation” of these devices would yield some benefits and not only for school kids 🙂
Phones don’t belong in the class room.
The sense of entitlement on the part of some students and their parents is breathtaking.
Mobile smart ‘phones have replaced cigarets….it’s an addiction. can’t live without it, culture has embraced it and your nobody without it !!!
