In one more racist rant former US President Donald Trump compared compared himself to Giannis Antetokounmpo, claiming that he has as much… “Greek” in him as the Milwaukee Bucks superstar.
During his speech that took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Friday, November 1, Trump began commenting about the Fiserv Forum where the event was hosted, the same arena the Bucks use as home court. He then questioned who between him and Giannis has more “Greek” in them, in a comment with obvious racist undertones.
“And tell me who has more Greek in him? The Greek or me?” Trump asked the crowd. “I think we have about the same, right? He is some.”
“Your team is very good. I would say the Greek is a seriously good player. And tell me, who has more Greek in him, the Greek or me? I think we have about the same. He’s a great player, maybe the best player in the NBA actually. He’s supposed to be a very good guy too,” Trump said.
Trump had referred to Antetokounmpo as “the Greek” before in previous visits to Milwaukee, without mentioning his name. He was apparently also unaware that the Bucks are 1-4 in the NBA regular season and not really “very good” right now, media reported.
Late on Saturday, the Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo reacted to Donald Trump questioning Greek heritage and thus in a very distanced and diplomatic way.
“I’m not aware of the comments,” Giannis Antetokounmpo said.
“At the end of the day, I don’t follow politics that much. And the little that I follow, I try to keep my political views to myself and my family. I’m here to, you know, win basketball games and not answer to non-basketball questions. But, I wish both candidates best of luck,” he added, according to milwaukeejournalsentinel.com.
Of Nigerian descent, Giannis Antetokounmpo was born and raised in Athens. Greece, went to a Greek school and speaks perfect Greek. He was granted Greek citizenship in 2013, along with his brothers and before he was drafted by at he Bucks.
Giannis Antetokounmpo holds the Greek flag as their boat passes by during the Opening Ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games on July 26.
