Temperatures in Greece to drop by 10°C over the weekend

Meteorologists in Greece forecast a significant drop of temperatures in the upcoming weekend, followed by snowfalls and local rainstorms.

The weather is expected to deteriorate from Saturday, November 23, and the “winter invasion” will be of short duration, of some 48 hours. Main characteristics will be a significant temperature drop of even 10 degrees Celsius, northerly winds and local storms.

According to director of the National Meteorological Service, Thodoris Kolidas,  temperature will fall significantly below the seasonal levels, by around 10 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Sakis Arnaoutoglou speaks of an “express” deterioration of the weather, with cold air masses leading to significant temperature drop. On Sunday, November 24, the temperature is expected to drop by up to 10 degrees Celsius in Crete.

On Friday early in the morning, showers may occur in the southeastern areas, mainly in the Dodecanese. After noon, the weather will change in the west with rain, showers and local storms. Southerly winds up to 6 and locally 7 Beaufort in the Aegean and up to 7 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea. According to the meteorologist, on Friday it will be chilly until noon, however the weather will soften later in the day.

On Saturday, a “rapid” deterioration of the weather is expected with showers and local storms in the morning in the west and north of the country. From noon onward, the weather will clear up throughout the country, except for Crete and the islands of the Eastern Aegean.

Temporary snowfalls in the mountains of northern Greece at relatively high altitudes. “On Saturday, the north wind will blow and it will be cold, mainly from the afternoon onward,” Arnaoutoglou stressed.

However, temperatures are expected to return to seasonal levels next week.
