More than 18,000 cases of domestic violence recorded in Greece in 2024

Domestic violence against women has shown a spike in the first ten months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, the Greek Police said on Sunday.

Police records show that 18, 427 incidents were recorded in January-October 2024 compared to 9,860 in the same period of 2023.

The majority of the victims were women, and the perpetrators men, while also men have been victims of domestic violence.

In the period January-October 2024, there were 5,583 male victims and 15,571 female ones. For the same period, the gender of perpetrators was 15,413 males and 3,565 females.

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chryssochoidis has repeatedly cautioned that the increase in incidents is not entirely attributed to a rise in incidents alone, but includes a rise in the reporting of domestic violence to authorities.

It should be recalled that Greek Police opened six offices across the country in order to manage domestic violence cases in 2021, especially after the rise of femicide cases. Furthermore, the Police has supplied with a so-called Panic button any victim of domestic violence requesting for it.

  1. Yesterday was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. But I guess that went mostly unnoticed in many parts of the world.

    These figures are quite shocking.
