Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued a warning of a weather deterioration forecast to bring heavy snow- and rainfalls as well as locally strong thunderstorms, gale force winds and significant temperature drop.
The bad weather front is forecast to affect the country from Sunday, January 12, until Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Snowfall will occur in the mountainous mainland as well as in the semi-mountainous areas of the central and northern country. In northern Greece, from Sunday evening and Monday, it will also snow in areas with lower altitudes.

Temperature over these three days will drop in the central and northern parts by 9 to 10 degrees Celsius and in the rest of the country by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, returning to normal seasonal levels.
Northeasterly winds in the central and northern Aegean will reach 8 to 9 Beaufort.
The intense weather phenomena will gradually be limited to the south and will weaken on Tuesday, January 14.

Sunday, Jan 12
a) Rain – Thunderstorms
Locally heavy rains and storms will occur initially in the northern Ionian Sea and Epirus, gradually in western and central Macedonia, Thessaly (mainly in the east and north), the Sporades islands, northern Evia and from the afternoon temporarily in eastern Macedonia, the southern Ionian Sea and the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean Sea.
b) Snow
In western Macedonia, particularly heavy snowfalls will occur in mountainous-semi-mountainous areas from the morning to noon and gradually in areas with lower altitudes.
In central, eastern Macedonia and Thrace, snowfall will initially occur in the mountains, from noon in the semi-mountainous areas and towards the evening in areas with lower altitudes.
In Epirus and Thessaly (especially western) snow will fall from noon in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas.
c) Winds
Locally stormy northeasterly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort will blow from noon in the northern Aegean Sea.
d) Temperature
The temperature will gradually drop in northern Greece by 6 to 7 degrees Celsius and 3 to 4 degrees in the central country.

a) Rain – Thunderstorms
Heavy rains and storms are initially expected in the Ionian Sea (mainly the south), the islands of the northern and eastern Aegean, the Peloponnese and gradually in Central Greece, Thessaly (mainly in the east), the Sporades and Evia.
b) Snow
In Epirus, Macedonia, Thrace and Thessaly, heavy snowfalls will be noted locally in mountainous-semi-mountainous areas and in places it will snow in areas with lower altitudes.
In Central Greece and the Peloponnese, snowfalls will be noted in mountainous-semi-mountainous areas.
c) Winds
In the northern Aegean Sea, gale force northeasterly winds of 8 to 9 Beaufort will blow. In the Ionian Sea, gale force east southeasterly winds of 7 to 8 Beaufort will blow.
d) Temperature
The temperature will drop further in the central and northern parts by 3 to 4 degrees.
Tuesday, Jan 14
Snowfall in the north will gradually weaken and in the evening will be limited mainly to the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of the central and southern mainland, while rainfall will be limited to the southern Ionian Sea, the Peloponnese, the Cyclades and Crete.
Gale force winds in the Aegean Sea of 8 to 9 and in the Ionian Sea of 7 to 8 Beaufort will gradually weaken from midday onward.
Temperature in the mainland will remain at low levels and will not exceed 4 to 5 in the north and 09 to 10 degrees Celsius in the rest of the mainland.
