The incredible rescue of an Irish setter found to be swimming for her survival in the sea. The dog was struggling to stay afloat two nautical miles from land.
It was a boat of the Greek Coast Guard that spotted the poor animal two nautical miles off the port of Katakolo in Ilia prefecture in south-western Peloponnese on February 28, 2025.

The crew was very surprised at the sight of the animal swimming at such a great distance from land and at great depth, local media iliaenimerosi.gr reported.

A few moments later, the Coast Guard crew took action to collect the unfortunate animal that was struggling with the sea.
With coordinated moves, they managed to collect the very friendly female Setter, and to board it safe and sound on the vessel. The dog was clearly exhausted and accepted with great pleasure the care of the Coast Guard men, while it said “Thank you!” for her rescue in her own doggy way with …barking.
Back on safe land, the dog was ultimately adopted by the personnel of hotel “Orizontes” in Katakolo. They gave her the name Mare, Italian for “Sea.”
They took her to the local vet who found her healthy – despite all the adventure and exhaustion. The vet estimated that Mare was about 3 and a half years old.
Mare enjoys safety and first class care in the hotel
It is not known how she found herself in the sea and so far away from land. Did she go for a swim and was carried away from the currents? did she fall from a boat/yacht or vessel sailing off Katakolo? Or was she thrown from a boat by her owner who just wanted to get rid of her?
So far, no human has claimed ownership for Mare who was also not micro-chipped.

As all four-legged sweeties will never speak about her adventure, she may silently forgive and forget, and enjoy her new loving home.

irish setters are red or red and white but never tri colour
great story nonetheless
Quite correct, but English Setters can be tri coloured. The English Setter is quite a popular breed in Greece and her Islands. A very good hunting dog, with a lovely temperament.
Lets hope the poor thing doesnt spend the rest of her life chained up, outside in all weathers, after her ordeal.
