Greece Weather Warning: Heatwave with up to 42-43°C

Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued a weather warning of a heatwave forecast to “toast” the country in the following four days.

The extensive high pressure field that covers the coasts of Africa and the Central Mediterranean and is accompanied by very warm air masses is gradually expanding further east and will bring very high temperatures in the country from Tuesday, June 11, to Friday, June 14, 2024, EMY noted in its “Orange Alert.”

The highest temperatures will occur in the interior of mainland Greece, mainly in the central and southern areas, in areas that are not affected by the sea breeze.

The peak of the heatwave is forecast for June 12 and 13, when temperatures are expected to reach 40-41 degrees Celsius and even 42-43°C in some areas including Athens and Attica.

HEATWAVE Forecast analytically

1. Tuesday, June 11

high temperatures will prevail mainly in the central and southern continental regions. The maximum temperature value will reach:

a. in the northern continental regions 36-37° C and in central Macedonia 37-38 degrees Celsius.
b. in western Sterea and western Peloponnese their 36-39° C.
c. in eastern Sterea, Thessaly and eastern Peloponnese 39-40° C and locally 41° C.
d. in the islands 34-36° C,  in the Ionian Islands and the Dodecanese 37-38° C and in the interior of Crete 39° C.

2. Wednesday and Thursday, June 12-14

temperatures will peak in terms of both their maximum and minimum values.

a. In the northern continental regions, the maximum value of the temperature will reach 38-39° C and in central Macedonia locally 40° C, while its minimum values ​​will range around 25-27° C.
b. In western Sterea and western Peloponnese the maximum temperature will reach 38-40° C,  in Thessaly 41-42° C  with minimum values ​​around 26-28° C.
c. In eastern Sterea and the eastern Peloponnese, 41-42° C and possibly 43° C locally. Minimum values ​​will range from 27-29° C.
d. In the islands in the average,  the maximum temperature value will reach 35-37° C, in the Ionian islands, the islands of the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese 38-39° C, while locally in the interior of Crete it is likely to reach 40-42° C. Its minimum values ​​will range from 27 to 29 degrees Celsius.

e. In Attica, the maximum temperatures will reach 40-41 ° C on Wednesday and possibly 42° C on Thursday. Temperature will be 3 t0 5 degrees lower in coastal areas.

3. Friday, June 14

temperature will drop in the west, the center and the north, but in the rest of the regions it will remain at very high levels. From the afternoon hours a change in the weather is expected in northern Greece with storms which will be accompanied by strong winds.

a. In the northern continental regions, the maximum value of the temperature will reach 34 to 36 degrees and in central Macedonia 37 degrees Celsius, while its minimum values ​​will range from 24 to 26 degrees Celsius.
b. In the rest of the mainland, the maximum temperature will reach 36 to 38 degrees, in the interior of Sterea, Thessaly and the Peloponnese, 39° C, while the minimum values ​​will be around 25 to 27 degrees.
c. In the island country, the maximum temperature will reach 34 to 36 degrees and in the islands of the eastern Aegean, the Dodecanese and the interior of Crete, 37-39° C and possibly 40° C, while its minimum values ​​will be around 27 to 28 degrees Celsius .

It is pointed out that over the weekend throughout the country, temperature will drop by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius throughout the country and will return to normal seasonal levels. At the same time, strong northerly winds will prevail.
