Thessaloniki: Coroners confirm “woman was buried alive”

Coroners confirmed the shocking suspicion: that a woman was buried alive last year in Thessaloniki in northern Greece. In September 2014, the case of a 49-year-old cancer patient had shocked the public when some eye witnesses had claimed that they had heard noises coming from her grave and a voice calling for help. The woman was buried 12 hours after her passing away in a private clinic.

The coroners who conducted autopsy had excluded any option that the woman was buried alive and even spoke.

The deceased’s relatives did not give up and ordered further investigation.

But now, a year later, the shock! The family’s lawyer gave to the press the report of autopsies conducted by three coroners.

“The death of K.Z. occurred during her burial while she was alive probably as a result of a heart attack,” one of the coroners notes in his report and explains that the woman was considered dead due to the effect of medication she had received while at the clinic and adds that  “the cardiopulmonary function were compromised.”

In his findings report the coroner speaks of a “rare case of apparent death” and “suspended animation” and that the phenomenon was not recognized as such due to “superficial examination of the early signs of death and shoddy laboratory findings.”

Two other independent coroners confirm the above mentioned report saying that if the woman was dead before the burial, the ‘death stiffness’ would have hindered the opening of the eyes and the mouth.

The coroners speak of the so-called Lazarus syndrome, which isthe spontaneous return of circulation after failed attempts at resuscitation. Its occurrence has been noted in medical literature at least 25 times since 1982.” Also called Lazarus phenomenon, it takes its name from the biblical story of Lazarus, who was raised from the dead by Jesus.

The lawyer of the family told media that “the case does not end here”, implying lawsuits against everyone responsible.
