Traces of radiation in Greece: No Reason for Concern, say Scientists

Atmospheric masses have transported particles of radiation from Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors from Japan to Greece. However there is no reason for concern as the traces are minimal, say Greek Atomic Energy scientists.

Greek Atomic Energy Commission (EEAE) announced that environmental checks during March 24-25/2011 showed traces of radiation (Iodine-131) in the atmosphere at concentration of 125 mBq/m3 (125 millionths of a Becquerel (Bq) in a cubic meter of air.

These measurements determined that the date of entry of these air masses in Greece was March 24, 2011.

The Commission explains that these amount of the traces correspond to radiation dose of approximately millionth of the annual dose from natural radiation received by the average person.

According to scientists, “there is not the slightest effect on health or the environment. It is obvious that there is no reason for concern and it does not require any measure of protection.”

The Greek Atomic Energy Commission also notes that no European country has expressed concern, let alone it has been any measure of protection.

“As expected, levels of radioactivity is so low that it has not been even detected by early warning stations, namely the telemetric monitoring network activity surrounding area”, the Committee said in a statement on March 26/2011.
