Femicide in Greece: Husband stabs to death his wife

A 41-year-old man stabbed a total of 45 times his 39-year-old wife, while the couple’s two minor children were sleeping in the next room.

The murder took place in the early morning hours of Monday, June 1, in Kalamata, Peloponnese.

It was neighbors who hear the victim screaming and calling for help and informed the police.

When the officers arrived, it was too late for the woman. She had succumbed to her heavy injuries.

The perpetrator tried to present himself as the victim claiming that he was sleeping and suddenly woke up and saw his wife standing with a knife over him. However, later police found no defense marks on the man’s hands and arrested him.

According to local media, the murder weapon was found in the hands of the murdered woman and it is being examined whether the perpetrator placed it there with the intention of misleading the authorities.

Friends of the victim told media that he was very jealous and possessive, there were often loud arguments and domestic violence incidents, however, there were no recorded incident at the local police. The woman was planing to file for divorce, one of her friends said.

The two daughters, aged 6 and 10, were taken to a local hospital for examination.

It is now the victim’s sister who will claim custody of the children.

Worth noting and typical for the mentality of some people in Greece in year 2026 is that the perpetrator’s father told media “I’m sorry for what happened, but my son is not the first who kills his wife.”

“My son lost everything. Τhe houses and his job and everything. I didn’t know anything. He got on his nerves, something came, he saw something… I don’t even know.”

Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrisochoidis commented on domestic violence on Tuesday saying that reported incidents of domestic violence have decreased by 12% in 2026, suggesting that this decline was linked to the measures taken in recent years. “This decrease means that something is working. Some perpetrators have obviously become afraid,” he said.

He also noted that during the first four months of the year, authorities recorded 6,500 reports of domestic violence and made 3,850 arrests, while some of those arrested have already been remanded in custody.

He did not make any reference to femicides in Greece, though. The 39-year-old woman is Kalamata who was stabbed 45 times was the 8th victim of femicide in 2026.

  1. I think it’s reached the point where we need to start educating our kids about this issue. I would say it’s about emotional reactions. We have to train our boys how to recognize strong emotions when feeling jealous or losing control of his relationship, and even we need teach our girls how to recognize this issue and offer strategies which may or may not help. I understand that women can be helpless in such a situation but maybe it could help if they knew how to diffuse the situation or not trigger it. I am a woman who has been in a violent situation caused by a jealous partner and I am only alive due to luck. Someone called the police and they arrived in time. But I definitely think we need to start educating our kids about it. Emotions like jealousy can be like a wildfire, burning out of control and destroying everything in its path. So we need to work on prevention tactics.

    • With all due respect and from someone who also has had experience with DV, the onus is NOT on the woman to diffuse or not trigger the male partner. It is on men to NOT abuse women and seek help if they cannot control their emontions/anger.
