Parents, baby killed in Halkidiki car accident; child of family from Moldavia in ICU

Three members of a four-member family from Moldavia, including an infant, were killed after their car collided with a fuel tanker in Halkidiki, northern Greece, on Wednesday afternoon.

The 28-year-old mother and the 6-month-old baby died at the scene, while the 35-year-old father and driver of the car initially survived the crash, however, with very serious head injuries. He was taken to Polygyros General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries them later at night despite doctors’ efforts to keep him alive.

The family’s other child, a 7-year-old girl who survived the crash, has been hospitalized in the children ICU with serious injuries. On Thursday morning she has been transported to Ippokrateio Hospital in Thessaloniki. She has been intubated and has already undergone two surgeries.

Speaking to news website newsit.gr, the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Moldova in Northern Greece, said that they are searching for any relatives of the family but have not found any yet. Referred to the girl’s condition the Consul said that she has suffered injuries and fractures  on the head, face, chest, shoulders and knees and that her health condition is considered serious.

The fatal car accident occurred on the provincial road between Polygyros and Agios Nikolaos, near Metamorfosi at around 18.30 on Wednesday. According to local halkidikinews.gr, the family of holidaymakers was heading to Sithonia, while the tanker was coming from the opposite direction, towards Ormylia.

Under circumstances that are still being investigated.

The 44-year-old truck driver has been arrested and is expected to appear before the prosecutor, today, Thursday.
