Marfin Bank arson: Authorities seek to identify sender of anonymous e-mail

Investigation into the Marfin Bank arson in May 2010 is entering the next stage, with the investigator handling the case  to request the identification of the sender of the anonymous e-mail, in April 2026, that led to the three arrests off suspects for the arson with Molotov cocktail bombs that killed three people.

According to media information on Wednesday, a similar request has also been submitted by the lawyers of the two arrested 42-years-old in pre-trial custody. The lawyers have already presented the investigator with a document, according to which the private company to which the email account belongs, declared itself at the disposal of authorities.

Mega TV reported on Wednesday evening that the lawyers of one of the suspects said that his client was in prison at the time of the arson attack.

At the same time, the two 42-year-old men whose names were given in the anonymous e-mail have been jailed on remand for the deaths of the bank employees killed during the arson attack. They have been transferred to Nafplio and Malandrino prisons, respectively.

The suspects haven been charged with multiple counts of murder.

The reasoning behind the pre-trial detention

The investigating officer and the prosecutor decided that from the specific characteristics of the act attributed to them, the fact that each of them has a participation and a separate role, without which the fatal outcome would not have occurred, that they acted with a well-organized criminal plan, knowing the results of their actions, accepting the mortal danger they created for the bank’s employees, shows that there is contempt for human life and a consistent criminal activity.

Furthermore, according to the reasoning of the judicial officers, the two arrested are suspected of committing new crimes if they are released on conditions, and this is why their temporary detention was decided.

However, according to media information on Wednesday, the lawyers of the remaining persons mentioned in the anonymous email were “present” to the investigator, stating that their clients are at the disposal of authorities, whenever and if deemed necessary.

Meanwhile, a 46-year-old woman accused of involvement in the Marfin arson attack is expected to arrive in Greece from the United Kingdom within the next few days. The woman, who is currently being held by British authorities, has consented to her extradition to Greece and will be transferred to Athens once the necessary legal and administrative procedures have been completed.
